Current initiatives include:

  • Completed collection of survey data re: use and importance of CNS core competencies. (Feb, 2007). Data from over 500 practicing CNSs indicated that the core CNS competencies outlined in the NACNS Statement on CNS Practice and Education (2004) accurately reflect contemporary CNS practice.
  • Convened task force comprised of representatives of specialty nursing organizations to assist with completion of competencies for doctoral preparation for clinical practice. (Feb. 2007). Initial work product expected by July, 2007 for initial review at the NACNS annual CNS Summit.
  • Initiated data collection to determine Relative Value Units (RVUs) specific to CNS care. These data will serve as the basis for the development of a reimbursement system for CNS care/services. All practicing CNSs are encouraged to complete the RVU survey accessible through the NACNS website, www.nacns.org.
  • Initiated a CNS Program Consultation service for CNS education programs and faculty interested in establishing new CNS programs or revitalizing their CNS programs.
  • Created an action plan with ANCC for the development of an exam to test “core” CNS competencies that, coupled with existing exam or portfolio, will be the certification process for CNSs for whom there is no existing CNS certification exam.
